Food becomes unsafe in many ways some of which are biological such as bacteria, virus, parasites, and mold. There are even some plants, mushrooms and fish that produce hazardous toxins. Physical is another type of food contamination, examples are hair, dirt, metal shavings and broken glass. The last of the contamination sections is chemical, these can be cleaners, pesticides, food preservatives and additives and even toxic metals that leach into your food from cookware and equipment. According to the FDA though, the two main causes of food borne illness are time-temperature abuse, and cross-contamination.
